New Jersey Vital Records Background ChecksCertified copies of New Jersey vital records are available from the state’s Bureau of Vital Statistics and Records. Certified copies of the birth certificates feature a raised seal and are printed on secure papers used by the State of New Jersey. These copies are supplied to the subject and his or her family members who apply for the record. Non-family requests for vital records, such as those made for New Jersey background checks on other people, will not be certified or feature the state seal.
Valid photo ID, a completed form and the current processing fee must accompany requests for vital records. Currently, the fee for a vital record search that includes a certificate, if found, is $25. Record requests that are deemed “No Match” will not include a certificate and the search fee will still apply. If you’re conducting New Jersey background checks, make sure to have the subject’s name spelled correctly to avoid wasting your money and time.

New Jersey Criminal Background ChecksThe New Jersey State Police (NJSP) is authorized under Administrative Code 13:59-1 to release conviction records, pending arrests and violations in the interest of public safety. The law applies to all ages unless the criminal records were expunged. These records, which may be used for New Jersey criminal background checks, may be requested from the NJSP by government agencies, lawyers, or the licensed private detectives.
An individual can access his or her own New Jersey criminal record . Doing so is typically in the person’s best interest as he or she can then be sure of what those reading the record in their New Jersey background checks are seeing. If there are any errors in the individual’s criminal record, it is within his or her right to request that the information is to be corrected.
Fingerprinting based checks are available for $41 from the NJSP. Forms and information on fingerprint checks and personal criminal records requests are available from the NJSP though the Criminal Information Unit at (609) 882-2000, extension 2918. Cashier or certified checks or money orders should accompany vital records requests, including those for fingerprinting New Jersey background checks. Money orders or checks should be payable to Division of State Police. Personal checks are not accepted.
