What You Can Do:
Certified copies of birth, death and marriage certificates are available in person or upon written request to the State of Delaware. There are three offices available in Dover, Newark and Georgetown. Official photo ID and the fee of $25 must accompany requests for vital records copies that may be used for Delaware background checks. The fee applies to the search even if the certificate is not found. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Office of Vital Statistics.
Requests for marriage certificate copies must include both names, birth dates and the place in Connecticut where the license was issued. A portion of the fee goes to domestic violence programs and part of death certificate fees are donated to Delaware’s Distressed Cemetery Fund. A request for a copy of a death certificate, such as those wanted for Delaware background checks, must state the requestor’s relationship to the deceased. Divorce records must be accessed through the courts in the town in which the divorce was granted.
